Topic : TP-Link TL-WR703N

I was wondering how difficult it would be to get HSMM running on one of these routers.

Here are some of the features of the router.

  • 802.11 b/g/n 150Mbps (130Mbps real)
  • wireless power output 20dBm - 100mW
  • 4 MB flash memory (can be modified for 16MB)
  • 32 MB RAM (can be modified for 64MB)
  • USB 2.0 port (High-Speed only, use an external High-Speed hub for Full/Low-Speed devices)
  • Powered via micro-USB socket
  • Tiny form factor: 5.7cm x 5.7cm x 1.8cm

If this is do-able what would be the best route to take to get everything installed?

Hello All,

Saginaw Valley Amateur Radio Association will have their Field Day at Elmer Lange Park in Kochville township again this year.

5851 Mackinaw Rd
Saginaw, MI 48604

We will have several nodes setup for logging as it works very well last year. We welcome you to stop by and check it out. Feel free to bring your own node if you have one, or your own laptop to connect to the mesh if you would like. We will have a GOTA station and anyone wanting to make contact or just give radio a try is welcome to join us.

Happy Field Day!

Scary stuff. I see two possible outcomes:: - Modified gear still usable by hams for Part 97 usage; - Modified gear no longer usable by non-ham Mesh projects. Our experimenter role may ultimately make Part 97 usage the only viable way to use post-factory firmware. John

This information was EXACTLY what I needed! I could not get my tunnel client/server to talk to each other. Adding that one line into each router fixed the problem. They are happily talking to each other now. THANKS!!!! Mike N9MS

How do we adapt to the FCC enforcement notice?

The notice states that adapting wireless network equipment for use other than that for which it was originally approved/authorized - including firmware update - is considered 'illegal'..

thanks for the reply. My nearest node is 2.5 miles away with direct LoS. I'm not sure the M2 will cut the mustard at that range. I have some external roof mounting options for the TP-Link, but thanks for confirming!

It will attenuate a lot, but might work for a close link. How close is the next nearest node? You might consider a ubiquiti m2 and mount it outside, I would bet the gain difference will be minimal between 24dbi inside and 11dbi outside. At 2.4ghz+ you'll find that it doesn't take much to attenuate your signal.

Hey Harvey, sorry for the delayed reply. I still have my router, i've yet to purchase a directional antenna though until I know i'd get some return on investment. You're 14 miles away from my qth, I sit @ 745 ft elevation, I know there's some minor terrain between you and I, I wouldn't be opposed to trying! shoot me an email @ k5acl@arrl.net, hop on the n5oak net sometime if your interested too, 147.320 pl tone 114.8, thursday nights @ 8 pm, I can usually be found there lurking, or simplex. 73 Johnny

Hi, I'm wondering if its possible to run a parabolic antenna (TP-Link TL-ANT2424B 2.4GHz 24dBi Grid
) from inside an attic/roof space? The roof fabric is wood and slate tiles. Is the RF transparent to the fabric or is it attenuating? Any advice appreciated. 73 Derek

All is well. I've got my Linux workstation up and running and I remembered my router password and everything seems to be fine... except that I'm not seeing any other nodes. I thought that with the number of Ham's that we have in Jacksonville, that I would surely see someone. I guess my next step is to get or build an outdoor antenna. I've got some Elmer help here in town but he is really busy. Thanks for the help. 73, Jim W3FAW

So, it's been over 2 months since you posted this, but I hope you see this reply anyway.  I'm just getting into this aspect of ham radio (my WRT54G is in the mail and should be here next week).  I'll need someone to connect to if you're game!  I'm located in far SW Austin towards Dripping Springs.
