Welcome
Hi, Eric
Glad things are going so well there. We're moving a bit more slowly in Volusia. Our current focus is developing within our ARES group a working proof of concept we can show to served agencies. We've been working out routing issues and learning how to deploy apps in a table top environment.
Now that we've got that down, we're preparing to go outdoors. Our current activities are building more nodes and learning how to package them. After that, we're going to test what kind of range we can offer. We don't have any "permanent" nodes yet so we're not ready to tunnel. I imagine we'll get to that after we can get a couple of fixed sites going.
Can you share some information as to how you packaged your nodes? Cable types & lengths? Enclosure types? and antenna selections?
I'm also interested in what types of locations are home to your six nodes. Are they in Ham homes? Served Agencies?
Thanks for keeping in touch,
Mark KV4I |

Firmware for Linksys WRT150N
Hi Glenn,
What I did was look on front page and , yes I see the hardware to use. What I did see though, was on the software files section a listing for the WRT150N model. That's why I tried to use it, figuring since it was given to me I could afford to play with it and if it bricked it was ok.
Now, as inuyasha.rules has stated, I did do some searching on this unit. It does appear to have enough flash memory in it. I did find on the dd-wrt web site that on some of the WRT150N units you have to do a simple software flash before it will accept a third party software upgrade. So with that in mind, I'll be trying that later to day after work.
I will keep all posted if I get it to flash and work.

On the front page of the hsmm-mesh.org webpage there is a link to "What hardware to use". It does not include the WRT150. If you get it working, let us know what you did.

Sounds like this router requires a special file before a 3rd party firmware will load. Try flashing d-wrt then the hsmm firmware. See http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/WRT150N |

As kd5mfw stated there is cat5 made specifically for outdoor use. However I would strongly recomend using a watter proof box with a "drip loop" and all cables comming in and out the bottom if you need to make outdoor splices. Outdoor rated cat5 is expensive so I would try to redesign your network to only use 1 run. |

POE Standards for HSMM-MESH
POE is an IEEE standard. It is outlined in 802.3af-2003 and 802.3at-2009. Long story short it uses the 2 unused data pairs to transmit power using a single cable. |

Welcome
Hello Mark,
Well it looks like the HSMM-Mesh is really starting to roll here in Sarasota. We got 6 nodes up and running as of now. I'm helping about 10 more guys that want to get a router and come meshing around. Just wondering if you guys over there have a Access point up and running? I'm thinking if we can get a few more guys here running and get an Access point here, that we could tunnel to you guys. Then maybe we could tunnel out to the Texas guys. Looks like this could be fun.
I'm still learning this HSMM-Mesh stuff, but so far they are all turning to me for help as I appear to have the most time involved in it so-far. I try and do the best I can, but like I tell them, I'm still learning by the seat of my pants on this. I've been reading about this tunneling mode though.
I did enjoy reading your post about the video conferencing at a peer to peer level without using a internet but node to node. I've went to that web site and downloaded the software, now starting to play with it.
Anyway,

Firmware for Linksys WRT150N
Hello all,
I was given a LinkSys Router model WRT150N version 1.1 I downloaded the software for it or what I thought is the right one. I used the hsmm-mesh-0.4.2-wrt150n.bin file. It starts to upload into the router then stops half way and reverts back to the preloaded Linksys software. I'm wondering if there is a version of this router v1 and I have a newer version being v1.1 I've already upgraded 9 WRT54g(gs & gl) models and they work fine with HSMM-Mesh, so re-flashing is not new to me.
Any ideas on this? Thanks for any help or comments.

The Serval Project
Here's another Australian group working on mesh networking for smartphones: http://www.servalproject.org/ The open source software turns smartphones into HTs -- with routers serving as repeaters. The WiFi transceivers in smartphones are the weak link since they are presently designed only for short-range WiFi. If the next generation of those radios can be upgraded to long-range WiFi, it is possible the node to node mesh range can be extended to match the performance of the cell radios in the same phones (miles instead of hundreds of feet). ...Dan K6DPY

uhhhh, why is it trying to use port 1805? +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Volusia MESH Status Update 1/24/12 - New Apps
Yeah, we've got an app for that. On 1/24/12, Marty W9OV and I set up two mesh nodes KV4I-100 and W9OV-100 and completed the following tasks. Web server access between two MESH nodes (like we did at the Vol ARES meeting 1/21/12) D-RATS chat and messaging between two MESH nodes via a D-RATS Repeater Proxy (RatFlector) Focus VideoPhone video chat between two MESH nodes. Details on the D-RATs and VideoPhone setup appear in the Applications forum in HSMM-MESH.org Thanks to Bud N0IA and Marty W9OV we've also obtained the use of a 24 db grid parabolic antenna and an 18 db panel antenna. After we obtain connectors and rig up mounts, we'll be announcing a date for an outdoors field test. 73 Mark KV4I

Focus VideoPhone
On 1/24/12, Marty, W9OV and I used Focus VideoPhone (free from http://focusmedia.ru/prod_phone_en.htm) to conduct a Video Chat between two HSMM-MESH nodes. Focus Video Phone is real time point to point video chat software. Unlike Skype, Focus Video Phone does not require a server or the Internet, only two points reachable over a network. We installed Focus VideoPhone on one laptop connected to a LAN port on KV4I-100 and on one laptop connected to a LAN port on W9OV-100. On each MESH node, we enabled port forwarding for the WiFi interface using TCP on port 4500 (Outside port and LAN port) for the laptop IP address where we installed the Focus VideoPhone. No services were advertised. We added the address W90V-100 to VideoPhone Address book on the computer connected to KV4I-100 and added KV4I-100 to the Address book on the computer connected to W9OV-100. We made video chat connections without any problems. Along the way we discovered that computers connected to MESH nodes with port forwarding on port 4500 could not call computers connected to nodes that didn't have port forwarding enabled for port 4500. However, computers connected to nodes which included port forwarding on port 4500 could receive calls from and communicate with nodes that did not have port 4500 forwarding enabled. After we enabled port forwarding on both nodes, each computer could initiate calls. 73 Mark KV4I |

D-RATS
On 1/24/12, Marty, W9OV and I sucessfully passed D-RATs traffic between two HSMM-MESH nodes. Here's the setup we used: HSMM-MESH node KV4I-100 hosted a D-RATS Repeater Proxy (AKA a RatFlector) running on a laptop connected to one of the 4 LAN KV4I-100 LAN ports. The RatFlector is part of the standard D-RATs install available from d-rats.com. The RatFlector settings were left at the default settings to accept incoming connections, to trust localhost and to use Port 9000. The only configuration changed was to assign a Repeater Callsign. KV4I-100 Port Forwarding was enabled for the WiFi interface TCP traffic with outside and LAN ports set to 9000. We also ran an instance of D-RATs on the laptop running the RatFlector and on a second computer which was connected to the second LAN port on KV4I-100. On W9OV-100, we connected a laptop computer to one of the 4 LAN ports and launched D-RATs. In the D-RATS Config screen (File\Preferences\Radio) we added a port (name should be the Repeater callsign so you know what's on the port, type = Network, Host Address = KV4I-100, port = 9000). There was no need to advertise the service at either node and no need to enable port forwarding on W9OV-100. It worked fine. Mark KV4I

You need to use port 2222 (default SSH is 22).
ssh -p 2222 root@yourmeshnode

ssh into node??
Good afternoon! In reading the literature on this site and others, I am playing with my test node for various functions. One, is attempting to add the irc server! Following the install instructions, all has gone well up to the part "Configuring Your IRC Server" The laptop I am attempting to do this with is running OpenSUSE and had used ssh on this machine in the past experimenting with another project.
Through the terminal, has tried every thing under the sun to login to my HSMM-Mesh node with no joy! Can someone give me some hints as to what I may be missing? Note: Firewall is not turned on in the laptop, as that machine never sees the internet.
Thanks, K5STX
